We are continuously working to reduce our carbon footprint as far as possible, in turn helping you to power your own sustainability goals.

65%

Targeted reduction in on-site combustion and purchased energy (scope 1 and 2) emissions by 2030 compared to 2015.

30%

Targeted reduction from UPM's raw material production and logistics (scope 3) by 2030 compared to 2018, through our –30 by 30 programme.

Our climate commitment

UPM is committed to concrete actions to mitigate climate change, with a promise to pursue science-based measures to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. As part of this work we are constantly developing the methodology to calculate our climate impacts where our own forests and plantations, our operations and our products play a role.

Reducing our CO2 emissions

Turning the tide against climate change means working closely together. We all have a part to play. And we can all inspire others to join us.

65% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions

UPM Specialty Papers is pursuing the ambitious goal of a 65 per cent reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, compared to 2015 levels. We aim to achieve this through a combination of increased energy efficiency the greater use of renewable and low-emission energy sources.

To name just a few examples, the electricity at our Finnish Tervasaari and Jämsänkoski plants is CO2 free. At UPM Nordland, in Germany, a new 80 MW Combined Heat and Power plant is more efficient and uses less fuel, and our facility in Changshu, China, now purchases 50,000 MWh of wind-generated power annually.

30% reduction in scope 3 emissions

In the paper production value chain, purchased goods and services and upstream / downstream logistics generate significant volumes of emissions. These sources account for a full one third of UPM Group’s total carbon footprint.

That’s why we are targeting a 30% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2030, compared to 2018. We aim to reach this goal through our -30 by 30 programme, working in close co-operation with partners and suppliers. This starts by requesting all suppliers to calculate and share their carbon footprint.
