(UPM, Helsinki, 18 October 2012 at 14.30 EET)  – UPM has been shortlisted for the PPI Awards in the categories of the Green Energy and Biofuels Award, and the Environmental Award. The shortlisting was granted to UPM for company’s UK operations and UPM Shotton paper mill in north-eastern Wales.  The awards will be presented in Brussels on 12th November.

“UPM minimises its environmental footprint by focusing on the environmental performance of all company operations. We have developed innovative ways to reduce our own waste and reuse waste in new products, leading to highly sustainable use of resources. There is perhaps no better example of resource efficiency than our Shotton mill, and its ’zero waste’ strategy. Not only is the mill based on the use of recovered materials, but it aims to use every last bit of those recovered resources to produce products or energy, and to waste nothing”, says John Sanderson, Director of Environmental Market Support, UPM.

The winner of the Green Energy and Biofuels Award will have shown significant and successful progress in the area of using biomass for the creation of bioenergy and biofuels. This category will also include any 'waste to energy' initiatives. In the Environmental Award category, the winner will be the mill management and production team that has gone the extra mile and above the call of duty to implement environmental solutions.

Innovative UPM BioVerno – Biofore in action

UPM has recently announced an investment in a biorefinery producing biofuels from crude tall oil in Lappeenranta, Finland. The industrial scale investment is the first of its kind globally. UPM’s advanced biodiesel, UPM BioVerno, is an innovation which will decrease greenhouse gas emissions of transport up to 80% in comparison to fossil fuels.
