The "SHOTS heard round the world" printing competition for graphic arts students has come to an end. The finals were held live in the 7th Beijing International Printing Technology Exhibition CHINA PRINT 2009 yesterday, May 14th.
The two finalists of the SHOTS (Sheetfed Offset Training Simulator) were Li Shuang Zhang from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology in China and Luis Alfredo Ropero Barbosa from Cenigraf in Bogotá, Colombia. The winner was Li Shuang Zhang from Shanghai.
There are 150 schools around the world using the simulator. About 50 of them actively participated the competition organised by Sinapse Print Simulators. The competing schools were given tasks - problems in printing press - to solve. The winner consistently solved the print problems with the best methodology, lowest production cost and least waste.
"The competition was a great way of getting young students involved. It also showed that there are excellent skills in every continent," says Erik Ohls, Director, UPM Technical Sales. "The SHOTS approach demonstrated well how modern and traditional technologies can be combined today also in education."
UPM acted as a corporate sponsor in the competition by donating paper to the 8 best schools as well as extra paper for the winner and the first runner-up. UPM China's Marketing and Technical sales teams handed out the certificates to the winners in a prize giving ceremony. "The competition offers UPM a possibility to work further with the schools and students involved in graphic arts. A natural price for the winning schools is paper which is still a vital element also in education," Ohls concludes.
