This concept is used for printing press analysis and troubleshooting purposes. The service, using the "Tape Solution", will be available for the printing industry during the second half of 2008 through UPM Technical Services as a part of UPM's service offering.
In the solution the i-tape is mounted to the press roller with electronics, which are hooked to a computer. The data transmission from the rotating roller is implemented with digital radio transmission. The electric power for the electronics is transferred wirelessly with inductive supply.
The Tape Solution service offers a real-time tool for different press performance analyses like tension variations in cross and machine directions. The roller delivers data in every revolution. This data is analysed by UPM's team of specialists, together with the customer resulting e.g. in better press runnability, reduced waste and improved overall press performance.
As a permanent solution for printing presses, the iRoll will also be available for the printing industry in late 2008.
