(UPM, Altrincham, January 30, 2007) – UPM has launched an innovative paper unloading system for its two-tonne triple width newsprint reels used by major publisher News International.
The initiative was developed by UPM's Logistics team and Ken McCoy, Director of Newsprint Purchasing for News International in order to seek safe and secure methods for the transportation of new width (2211mm) reels from the production site to the print room.
The technology, supplied and patented by Joloda International, has been specifically designed for the newsprint industry: a high speed unloading dock and trailer system for deliveries between UPM Shotton and News International's fully automated printing plant at Knowsley, Merseyside.
Ceri Jones, Logistics Technical Manager, UPM said: "Safety in transportation was the key factor in designing a new unloading system for News International. A series of research tests were commissioned, together with other key newsprint suppliers, at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) to assess the stability of the larger reel loads.
"The results demonstrated that the traditional method of 'on end' loading was not suitable for the larger width reels, and an alternative method of ensuring stability in transportation was necessary. Furthermore, our customer required the unloading method to be fully automated.".
C&H Hauliers contributed to the project as main hauliers for News International's new site at Broxbourne.
Ken McCoy added: "The partnership approach applied by UPM has enabled us to ramp up our Knowsley site with state of the art automation combined with the added safety benefits."

The new trailer has been built by the Cartwright Group, based in Altrincham.
