(UPM, Valkeakoski, February 23, 2006) – UPM Tervasaari PM 8 is successfully back on stream after modernisation. During the three-week shutdown, rebuild was conducted in the press section, drying section and both supercalenders of the paper machine that produces release base paper. In addition, the PM's automation system and electrical drives were also renewed.
The rebuild will increase the PM 8's production capacity from 130,000 to 175,000 tonnes annually, and improve the quality of the paper. UPM invested EUR 60 million in the PM 8 located at Tervasaari mill in Valkeakoski, Finland.
"The production started successfully and the first deliveries will leave to our customers today. The project proceeded according to the schedule and cost estimate during the shutdown. The increased efficiency of the production and improved paper quality let us to respond to our customers' increasing demand for release base papers and strengthening quality requirements, which result from the increased speed of converting machines and higher efficiency targets", says Eero Kuokkanen, Vice President, UPM Label Papers and General Manager of Tervasaari mill.
UPM Tervasaari mill has four paper machines, two of which produce release base paper (PM 8 and PM 5). The mill is the world's leading release base paper producer. The combined annual capacity of these two paper machines is 250 000 tonnes. In addition, PM 7 produces envelope and technical papers and PM 6 sack and technical papers. About 90 per cent of the production is exported.
