UPM is launching SmartWrap, a new, intelligent outer packaging solution for office papers. SmartWrap is based on the use of an in-house resource: speciality paper. The concept consists of wrapping five 500-sheet reams in this material in a special process and then providing the package with a soft plastic strap for convenient carrying.
SmartWrap stands out as a particularly environmentally friendly solution: thanks to its low PE content, the material is fully recyclable so that SmartWrap can be disposed of with other paper waste. Compared to conventional boxes, SmartWrap also reduces waste volumes by around 70% and packaging material consumption by around 40%.
Furthermore, SmartWrap introduces a completely new handling concept. The soft plastic strap makes the package really convenient to carry, the handy tear-off strip provides easy opening without scissors. The contents of the package can be removed ream by ream and the outer package folded before placing into the paper basket. The package has a great tear strength and double moisture protection.
The new packaging concept is based on an idea submitted by UPM’s internal innovation competition. From day one, the objective was to significantly reduce the amount of material needed for the outer packages of cut-size reams.

He is convinced that the SmartWrap concept will revolutionise outer packaging of office papers. “The new benefits offered by SmartWrap in terms of environmental protection and handling contribute decisively to purchase decisions."
UPM’s SmartWrap will be used in the outer packaging of the three office paper brands: UPM Office multifunction, Yes Silver multifunction and Future multitech. Production of the new packages starts at UPM's Kuusankoski paper mill in Finland.
SmartWrap is introduced at Paperworld, the international stationary and office supplies fair taking place in Frankfurt from 25 to 29 January 2006. UPM’s stand at Paperworld is located in Hall 1.1, stand E41.
