UPM has started to deliver super jumbo reels, also known as extra wide paper reels, to its customers. The reels are manufactured by UPM's Kaukas and Jämsänkoski paper mills.

The world's first wide rotogravure printing press over 4 meters started up in October 2004 in Germany and another similar printing press will come into use later this year in the same printing house. The super jumbo reels manufactured by UPM have been tailor-made to the needs of these printing presses. UPM Kaukas has supplied LWC paper in super jumbo reels since the press was started up and UPM Jämsänkoski has delivered SC paper since January this year. Before initial deliveries, many investments took place at the Jämsänkoski mill: slitter winders, conveyors and the wrapping line of PM 6 were modernized.

The super jumbo reel project was implemented jointly with the customer from the start and it immediately fulfilled both parties' expectations. Paper printing quality has been excellent and the customer has made cost savings.

Better printing quality and runnability as key success factors

The quality of SC rotogravure papers need to be improved continuously in order to meet the printers' and customers' targets regarding printing process efficiency and end product quality. During the last year, UPM has invested also in its other SC rotogravure paper lines. In addition to UPM Jämsänkoski mill, major modernisations were made at UPM Rauma mill to improve SC-A and SC-A+ grade quality and runnability. In addition, the investments improved the production efficiency at the mills.
