UPM invests EUR 8.5 million in the biological effluent treatment plant at its Kajaani paper mill. The investment covers renewal of biosludge treatment and the automation system of the plant.

The renewal of the biosludge treatment will improve the possibilities to utilise the biosludge in energy production and in soil construction and improvement. The new automation will improve control of the operations, reliability, working conditions, efficiency in use of energy and fire safety. In addition, the investment supports the implementation of the mill´s production efficiency program.

The construction work will start immediately, and it is scheduled to be completed during the second quarter of 2006.

The biological effluent treatment plant started up in 1985. It has been expanded several times after that. Latest investment to build an equalising and holding basin was carried out in 2000.

Kajaani mill's biological effluent treatment plant has functioned well. In 2004 the mill's discharge level was well below the permitted limits. The investment will further improve the capacity of the waste water treatment.
