UPM will build a power plant at its Rauma paper mill in joint venture with Rauman Energia Oy. The total investment cost is EUR 75 million, of which UPM's share is EUR 54 million. Negotiations to implement the power plant in cooperation with Pohjolan Voima Oy are ongoing.
The new power plant will generate electricity and steam to UPM Rauma mill and electricity and district heating for Rauman Energia Oy. It will utilise forest energy using bark, forest residues and peat as main fuels and biosludge as a supplementary fuel. Forest energy refers to the waste generated during timber harvesting – branches, tops and stumps.
The power plant will start-up by the end of 2006. It will replace one of the existing boilers which has operated more than 40 years. The investment will reduce UPM's carbon dioxide emissions by 70,000 tonnes annually.
The Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry has granted the project an aid of EUR 1.25 million for applying the new bark and biosludge drying technology.
