UPM, one of the world's leading producers of printing papers, exhibits its full spectrum of papers for printed communications at IfraExpo 2004 in Amsterdam during 11-14 October. In addition to newsprint, the comprehensive range of MFS, SC, MFC, LWC and woodfree papers tailored to suit the different end-uses and printing methods will be on show.

The theme this year is "Meet the people", which highlights UPM's aim of being closer to customers by improving in listening and understanding the customer and end-use needs better than before.

In particular, the spotlight will be on UPM Matt, the unique coated paper for coldset printing. Another core theme for discussion will be UPM Paper Services, comprising the areas of technical service, logistics, e-business, information and stock management.

"Youngsterdam News" sees daylight at IFRAExpo 2004

The promotion of reading to young people is in UPM's interests as well as for the whole printing industry. This motivated the company to make two real newspapers through a project involving young people from Finland, Germany and The Netherlands. Two editions of "Youngsterdam News" will be printed digitally at IfraExpo from October 12-13 by Océ, using UPM Digi Brite 52 g/m² paper from UPM's Schongau paper mill.

The age of the trainee reporters varies between 11 and 18. In Finland, the editorial team comes from the town of Kouvola, close to UPM's Kymi mill. The young reporters have practised their writing skills in real life by participating in the "A Day as a Journalist" learning program arranged by the biggest national daily newspaper in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat. In Germany, the writers come from Berlin and Augsburg.

Schoolchildren from the International School of Amsterdam will play a key role in producing the newspapers - they will actually finish the last stories on UPM's IfraExpo stand and witness the final layout stages as well as the printing of the newspapers on Océ's digital newspaper line.

The contents of the newspapers will, naturally, concentrate on what is topical in Amsterdam at the time as well as what interests young people from these very different European locations.

The UPM stand at IfraExpo in the RAI Congress Centre is located in the Europe hall 1, stand number 0525.
