At the beginning of March, some 150 beach land owners or claimants had already approved the compensation proposals for last summer's effluent emissions. The compensation proposals were sent out by UPM Kaukas paper mill in February.

Over 100 claimants have contacted the company by phone, requesting correction of faulty owner data or providing further information on leased estates. Most of these issues have now been clarified. Further negotiations are scheduled for next week concerning, for example, loss of cottage rental income.

With more detailed data now available on estates and their owners, thirty new proposals were sent out by UPM Kaukas this week, and the number is expected to rise in respect of leased estates. The deadline for accepting these proposals is at the end of March. The company is not planning to increase its offers.

Payment of compensation on which agreements have so far been reached will begin on March 15, 2004. Payments relating to agreements returned later will be made as they arrive.

Claimants wishing to make any further queries are requested to contact UPM Kaukas, the contact person at the mill is Ms. Leena Mertainen, real estate expert, tel. +358 204 15 4775.
