UPM-Kymmene is starting today the discussions with the local personnel on closing down the paper machine number 16 at Voikkaa paper mill in Finland. The machine is specialized in making improved newsprint, UPM Brite, mainly for newspaper supplements. Annual capacity of the machine is 75 000 tons. The closing would take place 1st May, 2002.

In addition to PM 16 the Voikkaa mill has three other paper machines. The closure will not limit UPM-Kymmene's range of improved newsprint. Voikkaa's PM 17 and Kajaani mill will be able to cover the needs of the customers who have earlier been supplied by Voikkaa's PM 16.

Possibilities for further employment in Voikkaa's other departments or UPM-Kymmene's other units are being investigated in the current employee discussions.
