UPM Specialty Papers and Orkla Suomi partnered for a six-month pilot project to develop a solution made from renewable materials without compromising recyclability and performance. Orkla Suomi wanted to find a paper-based packaging solution to support its goal of increasing the share of renewable packaging materials without compromising recyclability.
“We’re proud to support Orkla Suomi in advancing their sustainable packaging goals and excited that our collaboration was recognized with a ScanStar award, showcasing the impact of innovative, fibre-based solutions,” explains Kirsi Lahtela, Senior Manager, Product Portfolio Management, UPM Specialty Papers.
The jury highlighted the appealing design of the solution and the potential of paper in chocolate packaging. According to the jury, it opens up new opportunities to explore alternatives to plastic for a major product category, while also showing promise for improving packaging waste management and recyclability.
Designed for Panda milk chocolate, the wrapper meets the demanding requirements of chocolate packaging which traditionally required the use of plastic or paper-plastic laminate.
The new paper-based pilot wrapper is made with UPM Asendo™ Pro 75 g/m2 barrier paper. It is certified for food safety1, recyclable2 in existing fibre recycling streams and works seamlessly with Orkla Suomi’s existing flowpack packaging machines.
