Meet the new EVP of UPM Specialty Papers Mika Kekki

With a UPM career spanning 30 years, Mika joins UPM Specialty Papers from UPM Plywood, where he led the business for over 3 years. Mika believes that there are two key performance indicators that predict a company's success in the medium term: Employee engagement and customer satisfaction.

Can you introduce yourself in a few words?

I am 55 years old, married and a father of 2.  I started my UPM career in 1994 as a production foreman at UPM Plywood, and have since worked in a number of roles in the Plywood business, most recently as the Executive Vice President leading the team.

What attracted you to this new role at UPM Specialty Papers? What are you most excited about?

After a long career in UPM Plywood I am inspired by this opportunity to learn about a new business. I am excited about the products, which take a lot of expertise to perfect. I think we also have a fantastic opportunity to support our customers targets, especially when it comes to recyclability, sustainably sourced fibres or making the transition to renewable materials.

And of course I am looking forward to getting to know all my new colleagues and meeting more customers!

You have already started your orientation to the business. Has something surprised you so far?

It has been said that there are 2 KPIs that best predict the short and medium term performance of any company: customer satisfaction and employee engagement. This is something I strongly believe in. Both are in good shape and provide an excellent foundation for our team to build on!

So far, I have been fortunate to meet nearly 200 members of the Specialty Papers team. I have been pleasantly surprised to see how we have a strong and unified team. The team works hard but also knows how to have fun.

I have also met a number of customers, and am happy to see that we are recognized for having a high level of service, good quality and close cooperation. This is a great foundation, but I see opportunities to further strengthen  the value we bring to our partners.

How do you ensure work-life balance?

I have many hobbies, mostly sport related, including Nordic Skiing, pole walking, cycling and ice swimming! As a live by Saimaa Lake, in the summer time I take my boat out on the lake. I also listen to a lot of audio books related to business and leadership.

Any final thoughts you would like to convey to our UPM Specialty Papers customers and partners?

I encourage you to be in touch with me, if there is anything you would like to share! I also value feedback, as it is critical for personal development.
